In 2007 and again in 2008, Katherine McCanless Ruffin, Book Arts Program Director at Wellesley College, paid homage to Vandercook’s “Universal One” model by building a portrait of the press (as seen from the side) entirely out of typographic elements at her Shinola Press. Her first edition of 100 copies produced in 2007 was composed from metal and wood type. The second printing using the same type, shown above, was produced for Matrix 28 in an edition of 1000 signed copies in 2008. It was printed on a Vandercook Universal One, of course, in six press runs, with 6000 cranks of the press, in ten days. Phew!!
